My son went to college exactly two weeks ago today. It's hard getting used to the fact that you can only have a 2 minute conversation with your child before they say, "Love ya, Mom. Gotta go!" That's what the last 2 weeks have brought me in lines of conversations with my son.
But, tonight, I called him at the perfect time. He had just finished practice, shower and was sitting down to eat his dinner in his room when I called. I don't have his full football schedule figured out, so I sometimes call when he's dashing out to practice or a meeting or some other football related activity. His classes are all scheduled in the morning from 8:00 'til 11:00 or 12:00 most days, so I know not to call then. When I think I've caught him during a non-class or non-football time his room is full...with his roommates. There are 3 staying in a 2 occupancy room. So, when momma calls there's 2 other people sometimes in a 2 x 4 dorm room. It's hard to have a conversation with 2 roommates sitting there, who are basically still strangers.
But, tonight, his roommates had just left to go off campus and get something to eat. Good thing for the boy that he can't leave campus during the first two weeks of football camp or he might have been joining them and I would have missed him.
We had a great conversation. His classes are going very well. He's very interested and actually stays awake in them (which I think he did a lot of in High School). I still don't understand how he got those good grades while sleeping?!?
Football is exciting and fun. He said he's 1st string defensive back to start with on the JV team. This is wonderful news! He said there's only 2 kids who can lift more weight than he who are defensive backs and they are both seniors. He said he loves the fact the seniors and upper classmen don't pick at the 'new' men on campus. Sounds good!
He talked to me for about 20 minutes, then his father talked with him another 20 minutes. It was just so nice to get an opportunity to actually say more than just a few words.

It's quite an adaptation for hubby and I, but we are doing well. It's going better, because now I know that Sunday evenings are prime time to call him and actually talk to him.
