Swiffer Wet Jet Solution (pun intended)

I belong to a private message board. One of the members just had a baby, and she has limited mobility and time. She currently doesn't like to do the normal 'hands and knees' routine with her kitchen floor, because she has recently had a baby. She had a c-section, and her son is very little which means he needs her most of the day.

She posted that she kind of, sort of likes the idea of a Swiffer Wet Jet, but she isn't crazy about a few things. One of the issues she has with the Wet Jet is that the fluid is very expensive. The pads are very expensive and not re-usable.

I posted that I have a Swiffer Wet Jet and found I had the same issues as she did, but I had a few solutions. She liked my ideas, so I thought I would share them with you all.

I make my own solution and just add it to one of the old bottles. I had a problem disengaging the bottle from the mop unit without destroying it, so I poked a hole in the top and refilled it. The solution that I use is made as follows:

Squirt a small squirt of dish soap into the bottle, then fill almost to the top with warm water. Add a glug or two of ammonia (approximately 2 tablespoons). Cover the hole and shake well. This solution only costs me a fraction of a penny and it works really well.

Secondly, I don't buy the expensive pads that attach to the mop unit. I use a very heavy, old rag. I rubber band it on both ends to the mop head. I re-use the heavy, old rag as it is my favorite Wet Jet rag. Of course, I launder between uses.

Voila! A frugal solution to the expensive alternative.

I don't always use the Swiffer Wet Jet. I, too, am a 'hands and knee' kind of gal. But I do find that this works wonderful for those moments when you need a quick floor clean up.

LOL! I've got one of those too! AND I don't like the expense of the pads and fluid either! AND I found alternatives too! Though just a little different.

I don't have a particularly heavy rag, so I just use one of the generic cleaning cloths we have floating around. I can get the kitchen, entry way, and all 3 bathrooms cleaned with the same cloth by turning it over and using both sides. I've found that the velcro-type stuff on the swiffer holds the rag in place well enough.

I also had trouble figuring out how to refill the bottle, but wasn't as resourceful as you! I just use a spray bottle with Simple Green, which is the cleaning solution we use all around the house (you can buy it in concentrate and dilute to whatever you want). I think I'll try poking a hole in an empty swiffer bottle and see how that works! You can also get a solution similar to the swiffer stuff, but has a generic label (some people have a special finish on their hardwood and are only supposed to put certain chemicals on it)

I bet there are a LOT of swiffer owners out there who don't like having to replace the pads and fluid. I hope they find this post and pick up your tips!

LOL! Great minds think alike, Jennifer! I've been thinking about using the Simple Green cleaners. Do you like them? Do they do a good job?
Thanks!
