Current Update on Several Things

I know there are some of you who have asked how things are going with my son's bunch. Well, I have very good news. It was indeed an infected cyst. He came back to his dorm room one night after practice and having been on the antibiotics for a few days and also applying hot compresses to his cyst...it burst!

He called me in excitement and relief that it had burst. He had talked to a few others on campus that had experienced cysts and most of them had needed to have them cauterized and drained. He was certainly hoping that he wouldn't have to face that. So, he cleaned it thoroughly after it had seemed to finish draining and then put a patch on it as he said there was a gaping hole in his neck. It has since healed over and there is just a tiny mark on his neck (Horrors! It looks like a hickey). So, thank you Lord for watching over my son during this difficult time.

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We had dinner at my mom's. She's 77 years old and she cooks and bakes everything for Thanksgiving. I always beg her to let me do pies, stuffing, salads, etc, but she absolutely refuses. She enjoys doing big meals for her children and grandchildren, so I guess I'll just let her continue to do it until she feels she can't or doesn't want to. She makes me tired just watching her do all that she does. But, I wouldn't want her any other way!

The boy came home for 5 full days! What a pleasure it was to have him in the house again. DH and I did a lot of laughing and enjoying our son for those days. He had to return on Sunday for 9 more days, then he's home for Christmas break until late January! Yipee! I can't wait.

Although, I certainly hope the weather and traffic cooperate when we retrieve him and return him to college from break. It most certainly was a trying time returning him on Sunday after Thanksgiving to school.

The weather was fine in the morning and I hadn't watched a weather report for the remainder of the day as I should have. We left our house at 1:30 p.m. to make the trip to Buffalo. Well, seeing that it was the last weekend day after the holiday, of course, EVERYONE was returning home. The NY State Thruway is the road we travel when going to Buffalo as it's only about 1 hour 50 minutes one way. Actually, we usually take one bathroom break, which usually makes it a 2 hour trip.

Uh, uh, not on Sunday. The traffic was bumper to bumper and moving along 40 - 50 miles per hour on a road that has a speed limit of 65. Despite the scary icy, sleet, snowy mix that was falling from the sky, the roads were quite good. Of course, here in NY, it has to be a blizzard to stop people from traveling as we're all used to it. I don't like traveling on snow covered road, but I am used to it.

There were so many cars on the road, I don't think the icy mix had an opportunity to stick to the road. Well, about 30 minutes into our drive, we came to a complete stop! There had been an accident of several cars that had rear ended each other and with only 2 lanes going one way and no exit in sight....it took us 1 1/2 hours before we could start moving again.

The rainy sleet continued to pour down upon us and I was starting to worry that we would even make it to Buffalo. We did decide to change routes and got off the Thruway to travel NY State Route 20. Route 20 is a slow going road that has dozens of townships along the way where the speed limit is 30 - 40 mph, but we figured it might be faster than being at a stop for hours, due to accidents.

Wrong move on our part! We traveled Route 20 approximately 1/2 mile and boom! A fire truck pulled up across the road and closed it. Apparently, another accident! I can't say that it was such a bad thing to go back to the Thruway, because Route 20 was covered with about an inch of sleety crunchy rain and it was very slippery!

Back to the NY State Thruway and several hours later, we arrived in Buffalo. There were accidents along the way which made it even more scarier. The closer we got to Buffalo, the weather had dissipated into rain only, so the roads were better, but just way too many cars. So, a trip that normally takes 4 hours round trip ended up taking us over 9 hours! Whew! We were exhausted.

Of course, DS, like any good parent (I mean, child) asked us to call him when we finally arrived home as he was worried for us.

So, as much as I enjoyed having the boy home, I really hope we don't experience a drive like that again in his remaining years of collegiate study! I think the floorboard in the van would probably have a hole in it on my side from pressing the imaginary brake after 3 1/2 years of making trips like that one. My husband chuckled at one point of the trip and asked me if grasping the door handle was helping his driving! LOL! I've never had a car trip like that one and I hope I never have another one!

But all in all, the boy is safely back at college, we are safely home and life has returned to it's normal pace and activities.

Oh, but wait! I have to get ready for Christmas. I have shopping to do and baking to do and cards to send out and the house to decorate and, and, and....well, you get the picture...life is always busy!
